I glove you.

Gloves have been around for hundreds of years. Pliny the elder wore gloves. Throw down the gauntlet refers to men tossing a glove to engage a fight.  Cavemen wore them as did Marie Antoinette. Gloves have to me always been the signature of impeccable style. I think of Greta Garbo and Daphne Guinness. I think of my grandmother. I still have some of her pearl trimmed gloves. As far as accessories go, gloves are one of the few items that say, "I've got my shit together".  They show extra thought, a dedication to style and dress. These days I love to add a bright pair of motorcycle gloves to a monochromatic look. Here's a little inspiration & a few ideas on how to bring a little something special into your look without blowing your bank account.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to bring a glove into the mix:

and if you're feeling decadent, I'm really crushing on these right now:

Memento Mori

Memento Mori, which translates literally from Latin as "remember you will die", inspired a movement of still life painting that dates back to the early 1600's.  Largely popular in Northern Europe, especially in the Netherlands, it served as a moral reminder, with Christian leanings, but also served as a form of symbolic reminder of the brevity of life. Depicting an animal fresh from the kill, capturing a flower in its final moment of bloom or a piece of fruit as it turns toward dust were all powerful visual reminders that life is but a delicate moment, to be lived fully.

This imagery & idea has been swimming around my consciousness since my first Art History class when I was a young college freshman. I've always been drawn to the various ways this one concept has been executed over hundreds of years and across continents. The last two images above are photos that my boyfriend and I shot together last year. I would like to continue this project over the years and see how our approach and perspective changes over time.

All about Yves

I know nostalgia is a silly and self indulgent feeling when it comes to fashion. Fashion is meant to progress. Daily. And reinventions are what keep houses fresh & relevant. But after seeing what Hedi Slimane is doing with Saint Laurent (he dropped the Yves) I can’t help but miss the old days. The Yves Saint Laurent that made beautiful clothes and sensual women. The Yves Saint Laurent that endorsed androgyny, pantsuits and sexy, liberated, confident WOMEN. There’s something about the new collections that remind me of all that’s wrong with the world today. So for today, I am having a momentary lapse of reason and pining for the past. Forgive me.
