Musings on our consumer culture

Street style & its power raves on as soon the clothes on ones back/bag can be chartered/logged and sourced. Globalization marches on…there is less and less division between culture and geography when it comes to style because we all now have access. As it has always been then, the masses turn it viral and the seeking individualist reacts whether subconscious or not and personal style becomes home-brewed, stripped down & refined.

In the same vein I think the trend of bespoke, local, traditionalism reigns again as we’ve seen for several seasons and as we see in food: the current high culture. It's about locally sourcing and small batches.

We want the bags crafted in Ghana by woman who used the left overs of goats to make handles and rubber for the base. We want to feel the sole of a shoe and see the hand stitching. Hear the story of the man who tans the leathers in small Italian village…these artisanal mainstays are the heart and soul of our modern identity…the carriers of the standard. I think humanity is understood even in the way we shop. In the experience of the tactile & sincere life that is put into something. In this land of hyper-multi tasking and mass consumption and compulsive distractions it’s the slow focus on intent and craft that will lead us out of this vapid and socially superficial funk we’ve been in.

It enriches and engages our senses when we begin to taste a mushroom hand picked and personally sold by a farmer 30 miles away.  These experiences are personal and as the markets crash and our dollars are ever more sparse we think about how we use them. Its about a quality, smaller batch of consumer frenzy that finally gives pause. Makes us think about what we’re buying and why. Do we need it? What makes me think this is such a special way to spend the precious money we make…lets savor a little more shall we? As we’ve heard consumption is personal & political.  Make it an experience not a blind act of compulsion.

Happy Friday!

This should get your toes tappin'! There is noting better than Astaire & Rogers, don't you think?

Day dream digs

Can you imagine coming home to this everyday?
How could you ever be in a bad mood with views like these...swooning on this Friday afternoon whilst staring at a windowless office wall wishing I could snap my fingers and be in one of these Lautner tree houses.

A Well-mannered breakfast

When its 90 degrees outside there isn't much I crave first thing in the morning other than a cold shower and some air conditioning. Figuring out a healthy heat appropriate breakfast is challenging at times. I'm burned out on yogurt & granola so lately its smoothies that are getting me excited. I find smoothies a brilliant & easy way to get a ton of nutrients into your body with one easy sip! Let's face it, most of us are doing 13 things at once and don't have time for a proper sit down breakfast anyway.

My favorite new mix is:

Banana, dates, avocado, kale & lime!

Some of my favorite add ins include: Spinach, bok choy, any frozen/fresh fruit you can find, almond butter, sesame seeds, hemp & chia seeds, yogurt, flax oil, raw cacao and coconut water. If you're squimish on the greens add some agave to get you into it, but trust me, you won't know there's anything green in there it will be so creamy & delicious!

Grateful Wednesdays

Its been a heavy few weeks. Going through some tricky personal challenges and really trying to figure out the answers to some very hard questions. Sometimes I really just wish I could shake the magic 8 ball and it could decide my fate for me.

Unfortunately life doesn't work that way, so instead I'm gonna stop and recognize 5 things I'm grateful for today:

1. Breezy summer mornings
2. A boyfriend who is open to give our relationship another chance
3. Pitted dates
4. Having a calm space to clear my head
5. Love. I have such major support and love all around me, sometimes it floors me.
*(6) The supreme courts decision on DOMA! (Needed to include this one on this momentous day)*

A whiter shade of pale.

It's 90 degrees outside with what feels like 100% humidity and all I want to wear is white & pastels. All day, every day. It's not easy to be a well-mannered & well dressed woman in these sweltering, sweaty summer months. Here's some inspiration :

Alexander Wang
Zimmermann
Theyskens Theory
Stella McCartney

Proenza Schouler
MaxMara

Celebrations

Two days ago I threw my mom a surprise 70th birthday party in Chicago, in the old neighborhood where she used to live. It was a smashing success, she was shocked, stunned and surrounded by people who's lives she touched over the years now getting to touch her life.   It was like a cross-section of my mom's life. Getting to see all these people who love her and have different stories and ways that their lives intersected. Life is pretty amazing when you think about all the people you know and love in your life and all the seemingly random moments that brought each one into our life.

Here are few pictures from the night:
